Kaohsiung Lantern
Festival has always been one of the most anticipated activities among
Kaohsiung residents. Last year the number of visitors at the Kaohsiung
Lantern Festival reached nearly five million people and created substantial
business opportunities for the local tourism industry. Kaohsiung Lantern
Festival, along with Taipei Lantern Festival and Taiwan Lantern Festival
are the three largest festival celebrations of lanterns. This year, Kaohsiung
Lantern Festival added cultural arts in its lantern designs.
Purpose of the Activity
The 2008 Kaohsiung
Lantern Festival stretches from the Love River to the Kaohsiung Harbor.
This year’s lanterns are decorated in the theme of ”Love, Happiness”.
Large scale fireworks, lantern floats, and water dance performances will
be displayed; this celebration aims to increase the city’s international
publicity. There will be two main stages, with the larger stage stationed
at the Honorary Pier and the smaller stage on the sea. The 16 days of
events include the FantaSea Stage Play and the opening ceremony of the
lantern festival will sure be an eye-opening experience for all city residents
and visitors.
Explanation for the lantern designs
“Love, Happiness”
is the main theme of the 2008 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival. 2008 is a year
for receiving love and happiness. The Kaohsiung government hopes this
event will bring love and happiness to everyone. The Love River will be
ornamented with lanterns in a heart shape. Activities and shows will also
be held around the Love River.
